3ds Max Tutorials Chapter 6

Building from the Ground Up

This is an example of implementing floor plans into 3ds Max. What I did was I made a plan, and applied a material to it that was this image file.I made them both the same size so that it would be the right scale.  Then I set the transparency setting on correctly so that it would be see-through in the correct areas.

Then I took the spline tool, and I used the corner points to make splines for the floor plan, made it all into one object, and the used the extrude modifier to create the walls. After I did this I had to use the quit cut tool to go through and cut the polygons so so that there were only 4-sided polygons.

Here, you can see that I am preparing to make cuts into the polygons. I am going to use the grey and the pink polygons to cut holes into the green walls. And instead of the walls being one combined polygon, you can see that it has been cut into individual polygons where it needs to be.

Here you can see the completed cuts. I accomplished this using the Boolean tool in 3ds Max (pictured on the right side of the image.)

One of the great things about 3ds Max is it's extensive primitive assets. I was able to bring in a primitive for a door and windows, and this was great because it saved me the time in modeling these things.
