Freeform Modeling
The most basic way of freeform modeling is using the Push/Pull brush tool that is offered in 3ds Max. You can pull the model by holding down the left mouse button and dragging, or you can push by pressing the alt key and doing the same thing.
Here is another way to use the brush, this is called noise (because it represents sound waves, it is random and non-uniform.) This functions the same way as the push/pull brush but has a different affect.
Another great tool available to us is in the brush kit is the conform brush. These series of images show me taking this thin plane that represents a road, and conforming it to the topography of the "mountain range" below it. And then causing it weave in and out using the move conform tool, which allows you to move the transform of and object and still have it conform to the shape below it.


Here, I used the move conform brush to model these mountains, this was a cool way of affecting the model because there is an absolute zone and a drop of zone on the brush. Everything in the absolute zone will move the absolute amount that you move your mouse, while everything in the drop off zone will move a fraction of the absolute. This is kind of like the smooth selection from Maya.
Another really neat aspect to the brush tool is the ability to change its shape. Basically you are just affecting the drop of rate. In this image you can see three different strokes, each with a different slope. All of these slopes were custom made. this makes the tool extremely dynamic and helpful.
This image shows the ability to cap the offset. With this plateau that I have made you can see two tiers. The first tier is from the first stroke that I made, where it capped the height at 30 units. Then I released the button and started a new stroke on top of the first tier, and it capped it at another 30 units.
The relax tool is great for smoothing out really rough edges and making your model look better and more smooth. Here is a before and after image of using the smooth tool.
